Program Description: This program will enable the pharmacist to understand the most common pathogens both viral and bacterial that are responsible for causing upper respirator y infections. Knowledge based educational activity for Pharmacists

Course Learning Objectives: At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
Pharmacists


  1. Identify, classify and compare the major bacterial and viral pathogens responsible for upper respiratory infections.
  2. Describe the life cycle of influenza, the key antigenic determinants, mutation problems and vaccines and medicinal used to treat this viral disorder.
  3. Discuss recent recommendations as to the treatment of respiratory syncytial viral infection with preformed antibodies.
  4. Explain basic kinetic and dynamic principles underscoring antimicrobial selection and effectiveness.
  5. Select empirically the antimicrobial of choice for URI with particular emphasis on the ever changing microbial resistance patterns.
  6. Interact confidently with prescribers and third party payers when recommending or disagreeing with medication changes to meet their formulary requirements.
  7. Counsel patients on the importance of adhering to the prescribed antimicrobial regimen and advise the patient as to how and when to best take their antimicrobial medication.

The New Jersey Pharmacists Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.  This program is approved for a maximum of 4hours (0.4 CEU) of pharmacy continuing education credit.
